We are in love with a long, rugged line of wild peaks and valleys, a High Mountain Traverse, stretching some 670km from the Cederberg mountains in the north west, to the Outeniqua range in the south east.

Welcome to the Rim of Africa High Mountain Traverse

A challenging, multi-day hike across the Southern tip of Africa. The 65 day hike is divided into 9 spectacular Traverses, varying between 7 and 10 days each.

We carry our own food, tents and equipment on our backs. The consecutive days of walking are challenging, as we hike largely off-trail through indigenous fynbos vegetation, over rough rocks, and along old trails, in searing heat, cold winds, and rain.

While we do hike far, it is not the distance covered or speed that defines the experience. We move at a pace that demands good fitness and enthusiasm for adventure, while also being sure to enjoy nature and nurture friendships.

How to take part

Join us for just one or a combination of Traverses, or all 9 Traverses to make one journey called a Thru-Hike. The Traverse takes place from 24 September to 23 November every year (and has for the last 15 years).

Places on this experience are limited to 12 hikers per Traverse per year. We invite you to apply for one of these places. The Rim of Africa Multi Day Hike raises funds for the RoA Trust’s Mountain Restoration projects.  Rim of Africa Trust is a non-profit engaged in alien clearing, path building and associate community projects along the route. Your contributions make the mountains a better place to be for all.

The Rim of Africa High Mountain Traverse is suited for experienced and fit hikers, who are looking for a different and meaningful hiking experience. We are not offering a tame adventure. We are led by experienced mountain guides, who are themselves in love with these wild places. They are there to enable our experience of the challenging routes with skills and knowledge. Every hiker is responsible for their own food, equipment and fitness preparation (we will advise you accordingly).

Please read through the FAQsapplication costs and Ts and Cs or get in touch. We strongly advise you to attend one of our hike preparation weekends ahead of the Traverse season.

We believe in the positive energy of these mountains
